PLANTERS WITH NEW LIFE

The Fondren Renaissance Foundation would like to thank Jack McCafferty and Boy Scout Troop 1 for their work to bring a "Renaissance" of the planters throughout the Southern Business District.  Working toward his Eagle Scout badge, Jack coordinated the work done by his fellow scouts and classmates to remove, relocate and replant 18 fresh containers.  Jack also worked with the Foundation offices to work with local merchants as the community comes together maintaining this new life in Fondren.  Merchants are asked to water the new plants and watch for litter within the new pots.  The Fondren Renaissance Foundation provided new pots, fresh potting soil and various urban plants bringing more green to Fondren.  Thank you Jack and your 12 assistants for working so hard on a Saturday in October.

BOYD SCHOOL

The 2007 school year has begun and Fondren Renaissance Foundation is pleased to be a corporate partner with Boyd Elementary School for another year.  Boyd is the only public school within Fondren boarders.  During the summer, the Foundation paid for the installation of new curtains in the auditorium.  The old curtains did not operate properly and were badly ripped.  The new curtains are Royal Blue (Boyd's colors) with   "B E S" monogrammed in the center of the stage as seen above.

Additionally, Dr. Helen Barnes, a Foundation board member and Boyd Committee Chairperson, helped coordinate the removal of carpet in the third grade wing.  Installed in 1993, this carpet was badly torn and had captured 14 years of spills.  However, when Fondren third graders came to school in August 2007, they will now be able to walk upon freshly sanded and glazed floors (pictured below) -- without musty, moldy carpet.  If you would like to make a special donation to Boyd Elementary School, please make a check payable to Fondren Renaissance Foundation and write "Boyd" in the memo line.

PHOENIX INITIATIVE

A "Renaissance" west of North State Street is in full swing.  After completing 18 homes on Downing, Dunbar and Northview in Phase I, Fondren Renaissance Foundation and St. Dominic Health Services have moved to Decelle, Dunbar and continued down Northview for Phase II.  By the end of 2007.  More than 30 homes will have received exterior grants which include new roofs, new paint, new landscpaing, tree trimming and tree removal, new awnings, new driveways, new lighting and new doors.  More than $100,000 will have been spent to bring new looks for residents' homes around Cherokee Heights Park.  To learn more about the Phoenix Initiative and other projects in Fondren, please call Charles Richardson at 601-981-9606.
